Yobe State Commissioner for Higher Education, Yobe State, Professor Mohammed Munkaila, has assured that his ministry would soon unfold plans to actualise the wisdom behind Governor Mai Mala Buni’s declaration of a state of emergency on education in the state.
Professor Mohammed Munkaila explained that on assumption in office, he mandated all heads of tertiary institutions to articulate their plans and prioritized needs and submit the same to his office for review and subsequently table the comprehensive document for government’s considerations and implementation.
In an interview with Neptune Prime after the state’s first Exco Meeting on Tuesday, the Commissioner further explained that the government is working tirelessly to provide the new ministry with technical directors and other supporting staff to discharge its mandate in critical areas such as manpower development and entrepreneurship education in the state.
“My vision is aimed at transforming our tertiary institutions to produce not only employable graduates at all levels but self-reliant graduates equipped with entrepreneurial skills in order to reduce over dependence on government job”, he added.
Prof. Munkaila also revealed that the ministry would undertake needs assessment visits to all higher institutions of learning as soon as the ministry has fully taken up with its manpower on the ground so that a robust academic plan would be provided for the institutions to improve their teaching, learning, and research.
The Commissioner, a seasoned academician, explained that the ministry would encourage the State university to introduce more professional courses such as engineering, architecture, quantity survey, regional and town planning, as well as other allied medical courses like radiology and physiotherapy, among others.
Commenting further, Prof. Munkaila assured to utilize his vast academic connections and contacts to attract research grants and infrastructure such as libraries and laboratory equipments for the state tertiary institutions, stressing that all institutions would henceforth adhere to rules governing the promotion of staff in the academic institutions especially quality research publications and stipulated academic qualifications.
He then assured the people in the state that the ministry would support the activities of the State Scholarship Board as its parastatal to encourage onshore and offshore student enrolment in various higher institutions of learning.
