Prolonged strike is to revamp education system – ASUU tells Nigerian students

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged Nigerian students to understand that the ongoing strike is to revamp the educational system and not to punish them.

Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU president, said this on Thursday while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the N34 billion released by the federal government for payment of minimum wage consequential adjustment.

Osodeke said the lingering strike is not to punish students but a push for the government to implement the union’s demands which will bring positive change to the country’s educational system.

“ASUU sympathises with them, and we believe that with what is going on if we continue with the struggle, we will have an education system where Nigerian students will have the same lecture rooms as their foreign counterparts,” he said.

The ASUU president said there was no need to call off the strike when the federal government had not attended to their demands.

He asked the federal government to do the right thing as the N34 billion released cannot cover their demands.

ASUU had on 14 February 2022 declared a one-month warning strike to protest the non-implementation of its demands by the federal government.

The union extended the strike by eight weeks on 14 March, after the government failed to fully address its demands.
