Public servants begin three-day warning strike over petrol price
Story by Mercy Adaje
Public servants in Nigeria have commenced a three-day warning strike over the Federal Government’s failure to address their outstanding demands, including a call for a reduction in petrol prices to ₦500 per litre.
The industrial action is being undertaken by members of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), which issued a strike notice directing its affiliated unions to participate in the exercise.
The notice was contained in a circular issued on Thursday by Gbenga Olowoyo, the national secretary of JNPSNC and general secretary of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU).

The circular was addressed to national presidents and general secretaries, as well as state chairmen and secretaries of unions affiliated with the negotiating council.
The warning strike follows continued dissatisfaction among public servants over the government’s handling of their demands, with the proposed reduction in petrol prices forming part of the issues highlighted by the union.
The action is expected to put pressure on the Federal Government to respond to the workers’ concerns and engage with their representatives to resolve the outstanding issues.
The development comes amid continuing concerns over the cost of living and the financial pressures facing Nigerian workers following increases in the cost of essential goods and services.
