Reps donate ₦704.91m to support vulnerable Nigerians
On December 31, 2024, the House of Representatives will present a sum of ₦704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu to support vulnerable Nigerians facing economic hardship due to the removal of the petrol subsidy.
In July, the House had resolved to reduce their salaries by 50% for six months to assist Nigerians struggling with the impact of the subsidy removal. This decision followed a motion introduced by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu during a plenary session.
While moving the motion, Kalu explained, “This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the country’s challenges. I urge our colleagues to sacrifice 50% of their salary for six months.”
Kalu added, “Our salary is ₦600,000 a month, and I appeal to everyone to forgo half for this period.”
At a plenary session on Thursday, Speaker Tajudeen Abba reminded his colleagues, saying, “About five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to meet the critical needs of Nigerians. I’m pleased to inform you that we have contributed a total of ₦704,907,578.82.”
He further announced, “On December 31, I will lead a delegation of House leadership to hand over this sum to the President, to be used exclusively for the benefit of vulnerable Nigerians who need it most.”
Abba commended the commitment of the lawmakers, highlighting their dedication to addressing the urgent needs of the Nigerian people.
