Reps investigate Customs over alleged smuggling, brutality after journalist’s exposé

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) over alleged complicity in smuggling activities and reported cases of brutality at border regions.

This comes after a motion presented by Honourable Sesi Whingan highlighted alarming reports of Customs officers enabling smuggling and engaging in misconduct.

He said: “At night, these same officers reportedly enable or turn a blind eye to rampant smuggling activities, undermining public trust and perpetuating economic hardship.”

Key revelations included a recent expose by journalist Fisayo Soyombo, detailing how Customs officers allegedly facilitated smuggling operations.

“Reports of assaults on individuals documenting illegal activities, such as the December 1, 2024 incident involving transporters Taofeek Olatunbosun and Rafiu Abdelmalik, were also brought to light.

The committees on Customs and Defence are tasked with investigating these allegations and reviewing the role of military personnel attached to Customs operations.

The findings are expected to address public concerns about economic instability, national security, and the erosion of trust in border management.

The probe accentuates broader implications for small businesses, especially farmers, who struggle to compete against the influx of contraband goods.

Recommendations will aim to enhance accountability, operational efficiency, and oversight within the NCS to protect Nigeria’s borders and economic interests.

The committees are scheduled to report back in six weeks.
