Reps move to halt private airstrip licenses amid security concerns
The House of Representatives has called for an immediate halt to the issuance of licenses for private airstrips, urging the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, to revoke any existing licenses.
This decision follows a controversial incident in 2014 that raised alarms about security risks associated with private airstrips.
The motion, led by Honourable Suleiman Gumi, was put forth during a session focused on national security.

Gumi highlighted the recent approval of a private airstrip for Winners Chapel in Ogun State, expressing concern over the potential dangers such approvals could entail for the country’s safety.
“Given the prevailing security challenges, allowing private airstrips could pose a significant threat,” he asserted.
The discussion harkened back to a notorious 2014 incident involving a high-profile religious figure linked to the transport of substantial sums of money abroad, raising alarms about potential misuse of privately owned airstrips.
Gumi reiterated, “We cannot afford to overlook the dangers that could arise from unregulated access to our airspace.”
