Reps open investigation into tax law amendments as PDP calls for suspension

The House of Representatives has commenced a probe into recent adjustments to Nigeria’s tax laws, following concerns raised over the process and implications of the changes.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the immediate suspension of the amendments, arguing that the alterations were made without adequate consultation and could have far-reaching consequences for citizens and businesses.

Lawmakers said the investigation will examine the legality, transparency, and impact of the tax law tweaks, as well as the role of relevant government agencies in implementing them. The House assured Nigerians that the probe is aimed at protecting public interest and ensuring accountability.

Meanwhile, the PDP urged the federal government to halt enforcement of the changes pending the outcome of the legislative inquiry, warning that failure to do so could worsen economic hardship.

The House committee handling the matter is expected to present its findings and recommendations in the coming weeks.
