Scores abducted as assailants attack Edo train station

An unknown number of persons have been reportedly abducted following an attack by assailants at a train station in Edo.

According to reports, those abducted were passengers waiting to board a train to Warri in Delta State, southern part of Nigeria on Sunday morning.

It is yet unclear if there were casualties but there were claims travellers sustained bullet wounds, according to Naija News.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, who confirmed the attack explained that the abductors, armed with AK 47, invaded the train station on Saturday evening and began shooting into the air before abducting their victims, who were intending travellers.

“This is to inform the gentlemen of the press that today, 7th of January, 2023, at about 1600hrs, men armed with AK 47 riffles attacked the train station at Igueben, Edo State and kidnapped an unspecified number of passengers who were waiting to board the train to Warri.

“The kidnappers who shot sporadically into the air before kidnapping some passengers left some persons with bullet wounds. The Area Commander Irrua, DPO Igueben Division, and men have visited the crime scene with members of the Edo State Security Network, local vigilantes, and hunters to protect the lives and property of the remaining passengers,” the police statement read.

Sunday’s attack will be the latest after the Abuja-Kaduna train incident on March 28, 2022 were more than eight passengers were reportedly killed 63 persons abducted by the Boko Haram terrorist.

The attack forced the Federal Government of Nigeria to suspend train operations on the route until recent times when the verdict was revoked after a series of checks.
