Second Niger Bridge faces setback as vandals remove road fittings
Vandals have targeted the newly inaugurated Second Niger Bridge, stealing road fittings from the structure.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, with the expansion joint walkway on axis 330 of the bridge being stolen.
A source familiar with the situation revealed, “Unfortunately, it’s true. The stolen fitting is an essential component of the expansion joints on the bridge. Motorists using that road need to exercise caution as the damaged part can cause discomfort.”
Supervising engineers for the project have expressed deep concern over this act of vandalism, as the bridge serves as a crucial transportation artery.
The Second Niger Bridge, commissioned by former President Muhammadu Buhari on May 23, along with seven other infrastructural projects, stands as a significant milestone.
The completion of the N336 billion bridge was announced by the former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, in October 2022, finally realizing a promise that had remained unfulfilled for nearly five decades under various administrations.
Opened for usage by the Federal Government on December 15, 2022, the Second Niger Bridge aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the South-East region, stimulate economic activities, and enhance connectivity between the South-East and other parts of the country.
Initially proposed during the 1978/79 political campaign by then-candidate Shehu Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria, the Second Niger Bridge resembles the renowned Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
Spanning approximately 1.6 kilometers, it links Anambra and Delta states, relieving pressure on the existing Niger Bridge and facilitating smoother movement of people and goods.
As of now, the Ministry spokesperson, Blessing Adams-Lere, has not released an official confirmation regarding the incident.
The authorities are urged to take swift action to apprehend the culprits responsible for this act of vandalism and ensure the safety and integrity of the Second Niger Bridge for the benefit of all.
