Security agents nab vandals of Abuja manhole covers, track down buyers

Security operatives in Abuja have apprehended suspected vandals caught stealing sewage manhole covers from highways.

The vandals have been endangering road users and undermining public infrastructure for a while in major cities.

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Sunday, January 5, 2025.

Olayinka revealed that efforts are underway to track down collaborators, particularly those purchasing the stolen manhole covers.

“As directed by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, relevant stakeholders are already working hard to stop this act of vandalism by criminal elements, and the public will be briefed in due course,” Olayinka stated.

The FCT Minister condemned the actions, lamenting how criminals exploit public infrastructure for profit while jeopardizing the safety of others.

“Sadly, the government uses public funds to provide amenities for Nigerians, and criminally minded individuals remove these amenities to sell, posing danger to their fellow citizens,” Wike said.

Wike assured the public that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure the perpetrators face justice. He also expressed gratitude to the citizen who recorded and shared a media clip exposing the vandalism, commending the act as a much-needed display of patriotism.
