The World Health Organization has called for a grand coalition of international development finance institutions to mobilize resources in the North-East to facilitate the rehabilitation of the region.
The call was made by Director, Regional Office for Africa, World Health Organisation, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti.
She said that the region is now in the process of transitioning from the emergency response phase to a rebuilding and development phase.
Consequently, humanitarian operations need to be followed by infrastructural investments. Doing so, she said, requires a convergence of institutions such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank among other donors and partners that are oriented towards development to drive the consolidation of sustainable outcomes off the back of the humanitarian response.
Dr. Moeti expressed concern about the health care delivery system in the region and said that WHO will be supporting the region’s efforts to combat Malaria – which remains Nigeria’s deadliest disease.
She said the health organisation would assist the government by providing drugs, nets, insecticides and promote various health initiatives as part of its support to the government in the provision of basic healthcare services in the North-East. 4.9 million people are expected to be reached by the WHO-supported intervention. Dr. Moeti said that WHO will continue such anti-malaria programmes across Nigeria.
In his response, the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole noted that WHO’s programmes are being conducted simultaneously across the country and praised the organization for its assistance.
