Senate aviation committee orders investigation after inspecting fire-damaged Lagos Airport terminal
A panel of the Senate has ordered a full investigation into the recent fire incident at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport terminal in Lagos, following an on-site inspection of the damaged facility.
Members of the Senate Committee on Aviation visited the airport to assess the extent of destruction caused by the blaze, which affected sections of the terminal building and disrupted operations. The lawmakers described the damage as significant and raised concerns over safety standards and emergency response measures.
The affected facility, located at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, is one of Nigeria’s busiest aviation hubs, handling both domestic and international traffic.
During the inspection, the committee called on the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to provide a detailed report on the cause of the fire, the level of compliance with safety regulations, and steps being taken to prevent future occurrences.
Lawmakers also stressed the need for improved infrastructure maintenance and modern fire-fighting systems across airport facilities nationwide, warning that lapses in safety protocols could pose serious risks to passengers and aviation workers.
The Senate panel is expected to present its findings and recommendations after concluding its probe.
