Senate votes to dismiss 3 electoral commissioners
The Nigerian Senate has officially approved the dismissal of three Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) who were suspended in 2023 for violating the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Act.
This action followed a request from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeking the termination of the appointments of the affected State Resident Electoral Commissioners for Adamawa, Sokoto, and Abia.
Senate Leader Michael Bamidele Opeyemi, who presented the motion, referenced Section 157 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended), which grants the Senate the authority to approve such requests.
The three commissioners facing termination are Dr. Nura Ali from Sokoto State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari from Adamawa State, and Professor Ikemefuna Chijioke Uzochukwu from Abia State.
The motion highlighted that these commissioners were suspended in 2023 due to serious allegations, including violating the Electoral Act, compromising elections, and neglecting their duties without valid reasons.
Additionally, it was revealed that the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Department of State Services (DSS) had implicated Dr. Nura Ali in corruption, incompetence, and accepting bribes totaling $150,000 from politicians.
Following the Senate’s approval of the motion, Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio oversaw the plenary session, and the necessary constitutional procedures were followed to formally terminate the appointments of the affected commissioners.
