Sokoto governor’s wife celebrates lavish birthday amid hardship (Video)
The wife of Sokoto State Governor, Fatima Ahmad Aliyu, has come under scrutiny after a video of her lavish birthday party went viral.
It shows guests extravagantly spraying dollar notes on her.
This display of wealth is especially controversial given the current economic struggles faced by many Nigerians.
The party took place while the country grapples with widespread hardship and hunger.
According to the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics, Sokoto State is the poorest in Nigeria, with 90.5 percent of its population living in poverty.

The report further highlights that 65 percent of Nigeria’s poor population resides in the northern region, where Sokoto is also burdened with a high debt profile and significant security challenges.
This stark contrast between the governor’s family’s opulence and the severe economic difficulties faced by the state’s residents has sparked outrage.
The National Bureau of Statistics’ 2022 report noted that poverty in the north is more severe than in the south, exacerbating the region’s struggles with inflation, economic downturns, and insecurity.
The viral video has raised questions about the priorities and sensitivities of public officials in the face of such widespread suffering.
The governor’s administration, however, maintains that it is implementing measures to alleviate the hardship, including timely salary payments, distribution of palliatives and fertilisers, and cash gifts during festive periods.
The public reaction to the video underscores the growing frustration among Nigerians, who are increasingly critical of displays of wealth and opulence by those in positions of power amid national hardship.
