Soldier dies in accidental grenade discharge in Yobe
A Nigerian soldier attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Aulari under the 202 Battalion has died after an accidental grenade explosion in Yobe State.
Military sources disclosed that the tragic incident occurred at about 6:24 a.m. on May 26 while the soldier was handling an FN rifle fitted with a 96 Energa grenade.

According to the sources, the grenade detonated unexpectedly, causing severe injuries to the soldier’s face and left wrist. He was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries sustained in the blast.
Preliminary findings indicated that the weapon had not been fired at the time of the explosion, with the rifle’s safety catch reportedly still engaged.
The sources further revealed that while the upper section of the grenade exploded, the rear portion remained attached to the muzzle of the rifle, suggesting a possible malfunction or accidental detonation.
Following the incident, the remains of the deceased soldier were evacuated to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital for necessary procedures and further investigation.

Military authorities are expected to conduct a detailed inquiry to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion and prevent similar incidents in the future.
