Soldier in Bauchi kills politician following clash with party members

A soldier fatally shot Habibu Aminu Dankasa, a well-known politician, on Wednesday in Lere Village, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The incident was confirmed by the Bauchi State Police Command during a telephone conversation with News Point Nigeria.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakili, the altercation began when members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Lere Village had a confrontation with personnel from Operation Safe Haven, a military task force stationed in Tafawa Balewa.

Reports indicate that the PDP members were travelling in three vehicles for a campaign in Lere District ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

On their way back, they were stopped at a military checkpoint but refused to halt, continuing on to Lere town.

In response, the soldiers later arrested one of the drivers at his home in Lere, which provoked a retaliatory move from the group.

They returned to the checkpoint to demand the release of the detained driver, leading to a violent confrontation where the soldiers opened fire, killing Habibu Dankasa and injuring several others.

The police promptly responded to the incident after receiving the report. “The Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Muhammad, dispatched a unit of the Mobile Police Force to the area for reinforcement. Additionally, a team of seasoned detectives has been constituted to conduct a thorough, professional, and timely investigation to ensure that justice is served,” he said.

He stated that the officers involved in the incident would be identified and held accountable according to the law, assuring that the Commissioner of Police is committed to a meticulous investigation process using all necessary protocols, including technical and scientific tools, to ensure justice and resolution in this matter.
