Soldier stabs herder to death near Jos barracks
A tragic altercation near the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Rukuba Barracks in Jos, Plateau State, has resulted in the death of a 26-year-old tricycle rider and herdsman, Abdullahi Muhammad. The soldier involved has been arrested, and the military has vowed to investigate and ensure justice.
According to the Chairman of the Gan Allah Fulani Development Association (GAFDAN), Garba Abdullahi, the incident occurred around 7:00 pm on Wednesday near the barracks’ gate in Gebu-Bassa. Muhammad had stopped to buy something, and while reversing his tricycle, he inadvertently stepped on the soldier’s foot.
“The deceased got out of the tricycle to apologise, but the soldier, who was in plain clothes, slapped him. The situation escalated, and the soldier stabbed Muhammad in the chest with a jackknife,” Abdullahi narrated.
Despite being rushed to the barracks’ clinic, Muhammad succumbed to his injuries.

The victim’s father, Alhaji Muhammad, expressed grief and urged the Nigerian Army to ensure accountability. GAFDAN Chairman Abdullahi condemned the act and called for swift action to prevent future occurrences.
The spokesperson for the 3 Division, Lt. Col. Danja, confirmed the incident and conveyed the army’s condolences to the bereaved family. He assured the public of a transparent investigation, stating:
“The soldier involved has been arrested, and preliminary findings indicate the altercation led to the unfortunate incident. If found culpable, the soldier will face disciplinary actions in line with military regulations.”
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and advocacy groups, who have called for an overhaul of measures to ensure accountability among security personnel.
As investigations continue, community leaders and human rights advocates emphasise the need for stronger mechanisms to foster trust between civilians and security operatives.
