State governor lays off hospital management, dissolves varsity councils

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has dismissed all management staff at the Edo Specialist Hospital and Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City. Additionally, he has dissolved the governing councils of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, and all other state-owned tertiary institutions, effective immediately.

The Secretary to the State Government, Musa Umar Ikhilor, announced the decisions through a statement issued by Fred Itua, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary.

“It is hereby announced for the information of the General Public that the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the dissolution of the Governing Councils of all State-owned Tertiary Institutions in Edo State with immediate effect,”  the statement read.

Affected members have been instructed to hand over government properties to the heads of their respective institutions. Similarly, management staff at the two hospitals are to relinquish their positions to the most senior officers in their organisations.

Governor Okpebholo’s sweeping reforms highlight his commitment to restructuring Edo State’s healthcare and educational systems, ensuring accountability and efficiency across these sectors.
