State govt suspends principal over poor feeding in boarding school

The Akwa Ibom State Government has suspended Mr. Nse Sunday Umoh, the Principal-General of Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, over allegations of poor feeding in the school’s boarding facilities. This action follows an unscheduled visit by the State’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, who was prompted by complaints from students regarding malnutrition despite significant boarding fees paid.

In a statement released on Saturday, Etiebet confirmed the suspension after a viral video on social media highlighted the appalling conditions under which students were being fed. The video, showing unappetising and nutritionally inadequate meals, caught the attention of the public and the government, leading to the ministry’s intervention.

“The Ministry took swift action to investigate the concerns raised, and the findings were disturbing,” Etiebet stated. She reassured parents that the state government is committed to ensuring that public schools meet necessary standards for the well-being of both students and staff. The government also urged parents to continue supporting their children’s education at the secondary level.

The Commissioner emphasized that the current administration, led by Governor Pastor Umo Eno, remains committed to advancing education as part of the ARISE Agenda. She called for patience from the public as the investigation continues.
