FG scraps mother tongue policy, adopts English for schools The Federal Government has abolished the national policy that made indigenous languages the medium of instruction in Nigerian schools. Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the policy reversal on Wednesday at the 2025 Language in Education International Conference organised by the British Council in Abuja. The scrapped 2022 National Language Policy had directed that from early childhood education to primary six, teaching should be conducted in the mother tongue or the language of the immediate community, with English reserved for higher levels.
