The Obamas’ Love Story: Long before history and political power
On July 31, 1991, Barack Obama sat across from Michelle Robinson at Gordon’s, their favourite Chicago restaurant, and turned what she believed was another one of their recurring arguments about marriage into the most memorable ruse of their relationship.
The two had been sparring for months over the subject, with Michelle pushing for commitment and Barack, only recently passed the bar exam, playfully insisting he did not see the practical need for marriage at all.

That evening, as they reached the end of their meal, he reached for her hand and repeated his usual argument, that although he loved her completely, he still was not convinced marriage mattered, a comment that left Michelle frustrated all over again, unaware that he was simply buying time.
Moments later, the waiter approached the table with dessert, and resting on the tray beside it was a small ring box, catching Michelle completely off guard after she had spent the evening genuinely believing the conversation was going nowhere.
What made the moment even more touching was something Michelle only learned afterward, that Barack had quietly sought her mother’s and brother’s blessing beforehand, a detail that revealed a more traditional and sentimental side of him beneath his calm, unbothered exterior.
The couple had met just two years earlier in 1989 at a Chicago law firm, where Michelle was assigned as his mentor and initially found him a bit too laid back for her taste, never expecting their professional relationship to grow into anything more.
Their first date took place at a small Baskin Robbins in Hyde Park, an unglamorous beginning that Michelle later said sealed her feelings by the end of the night, long before either of them imagined a life in the national spotlight.
They married on October 3, 1992, at Trinity United Church of Christ in front of two hundred guests, sharing their first dance to Stevie Wonder’s You and I, a quiet echo of the same warmth that defined their engagement night.

What makes this story endure is not the fame that followed years later, but the very ordinary, almost mischievous way an extraordinary partnership began, built on debate, trust, and a ring hidden beside a dessert plate in a restaurant booth in Chicago.
