Abdul Hamid Saka Tinubu is widely known to be the first Muslim medical doctor in Nigeria. He was born in February 1901, his father Alfa Saka Tinubu was a wealthy and influential Lagos businessman, community leader and philanthropist, based at 51 Kakawa Street, Lagos.
At 22, he was already at the University of Glasgow where he graduated before his 28th birthday. He returned to Lagos for full medical practice. He was also a prominent Lagos sportsman known for his strict daily regimen of aerobic exercise and 10-mile walks, which he maintained well into his late 60s.
Dr Abdul-Hamid married Alhaja Wulemotu Agbeke Tinubu in the early 1930s and the marriage produced children including Alhaja Wusamot Adedoyin Adegoke (Nee Saka Tinubu), who until her retirement was a London and Lagos foremost educationist having taught in many schools in London for years before returning to Ansarudeen High School, Surulere Lagos & New Era Girls School Lagos. She returned and worked for over 3 decades before retiring in 1991 as a school principal.

His immense contributions to medicine and the community have been immortalised through key landmarks in Lagos. Saka Tinubu Street in Victoria Island, as well as the Saka Tinubu Memorial Ahmadiyya High School (the first Muslim secondary school in Nigeria), were named to honour his family’s legacy.
