Tinubu proposes Police Act amendment, IGP tenure
President Bola Tinubu has submitted the Police Act Amendment Bill to the House of Representatives, aiming to modify the tenure of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Speculation arose that IGP Kayode Egbetokun had attempted to persuade the National Assembly to support a bill increasing the retirement age for police officers, which the police later denied.
Egbetokun was appointed as IGP in June 2023 for a four-year term, alongside four new service chiefs.

According to Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020, Egbetokun, born on September 4, 1964, is slated to retire in September 2024 upon reaching 60 years of age.
By that time, he would have served just one year and three months of his four-year appointment.
Concerns regarding the tenure of the IGP are not new, as they also surrounded Egbetokun’s predecessor, Usman Baba. Baba turned 60 in March 2023, achieving the mandatory 35 years of service, yet he continued in his position until Egbetokun succeeded him.
