Tinubu-Shettima Presidency Confirmed By Supreme Court: Inauguration set for May 29

Story from Ibraheem Hamza MUHAMMAD, Abuja

The Supreme Court has affirmed that the President-elect of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his vice, Senator Kashim Shettima Mustapha, will be sworn in on May 29 under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Presiding Justice John Okoro, along with five other justices, declared unanimously, citing the Constitution, Electoral Act, and various references, that the Court cannot disqualify the President-elect and Vice President-elect, as demanded by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The Justices held that the party failed to establish its locus standi.

The five-panel panel of Justices upheld the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which stated that the Electoral Act specifies that no member of an opposition party has the legal right to challenge the internal affairs of another party.

The Justices also noted that there is evidence that Senator Kashim Shettima Mustapha indeed wrote to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on July 6, 2022, to withdraw his senatorial candidacy for Borno Central, and he has been replaced by Mr. Kaka.

Justice Amina Augie made reference to the nomination of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as Vice President, as he was nominated after being elected as Governor. Boni Haruna, who is currently in the Supreme Court, benefited from this and succeeded Atiku.

Honourable Cesnabmihilo Dorothy Nuhu-Aken’ova, the National Coordinator of the All-Inclusive Movement for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, congratulated the APC, Bola Tinubu, and Senator Kashim Shettima Mustapha on their victory at the Supreme Court.

She praised the Judiciary for delivering justice and urged Nigerians to support the incoming administration to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

Many supporters of the APC who were present at the Supreme Court have been celebrating, expressing their happiness that Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima will be sworn in as President and Vice President in three days’ time in Abuja.

The PDP had urged the apex court to reverse the Court of Appeal judgment.
