Tinubu writes Senate, seeks Oluyede’s confirmation as Chief of Army Staff
President Bola Tinubu has officially requested the Senate to confirm Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
The announcement follows Oluyede’s appointment as Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, after the late Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja became incapacitated due to illness.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga disclosed that Tinubu’s letter to the Senate complies with constitutional and legal provisions.
“In accordance with Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, President Tinubu has sent a letter seeking Senate confirmation of Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede’s appointment as the substantive Chief of Army Staff,” Onanuga said in a statement.

Oluyede stepped into the acting role following the illness of his predecessor, General Lagbaja, who tragically passed away on November 5. The late General was buried amidst an outpouring of grief and tributes in Abuja.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in Oluyede’s capabilities, citing his “leadership qualities, professional integrity, and experience” as crucial assets to guide the Nigerian Army in ensuring national security and stability.
With the President’s formal request now before the Senate, all eyes are on the lawmakers to act swiftly on the confirmation of Oluyede, who is expected to bring stability and direction to the military’s operations.
This development underscores Tinubu’s commitment to reinforcing the Nigerian Army’s leadership amidst current national security challenges.
