Why residents of Bauchi community are concerned about gas plant construction

Story from Najib SANI, Bauchi

Tirwun community in Bauchi state capital has expressed concern over the ongoing construction of a gas plant in the area.

The concerned residents of the community who addressed newsmen at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Bauchi said the gas station poses danger to the residents as it is surrounded by residential houses and a Friday mosque that gathers hundreds of worshippers.

The spokesperson of the concerned community members, Malam Muhammad Ali Chiroma, who spoke at the news conference further stated that the proposed gas plant is close to a petroleum station fearing that the combination of the duo at the same place presents double jeopardy.

He added that the promoters of the gas plant have allegedly failed to provide an environmental impact assessment report to the host community to ascertain the effects and mitigating measures.

“The concerned residents of Tirwun and ATBU Kari estate staff quarters are hereby appealing to the authorities to halt the construction of a gas plant. This location of Action Energy gas plant at the site located behind Soro petrol filling station along ATBU Kari estate road, opposite the Tirwun Jumma’at/Eid mosque is hazardous.

“In the unfortunate event of an explosion, which is imminent, this location not only puts the lives of thousands of Tirwun Jumma’at/Eid mosque worshippers at risk but also the lives of hundreds of residents as well as the lives of the pupils and students from both the adjacent Nursery/Primary and Tsangaya schools in jeopardy”. He said.
