Trump blasts bishop, demands public apology

On Wednesday, Donald Trump referred to a Washington bishop as “nasty” and demanded an apology after she told him from the pulpit that he was instilling fear among immigrants and LGBTQ people in the country.

Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, calling the bishop a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater” and accusing her of politicizing her church in an ungracious manner.

He criticized her tone, describing it as nasty, and stated her remarks were neither compelling nor intelligent.

The remarks were made by Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington during a service at the Washington National Cathedral.

Trump had attended the service, which took place on Tuesday morning, as part of the customary inaugural ceremony. Budde, addressing a solemn-looking Trump seated in the front pew next to his wife Melania, urged him to “have mercy.”

In his earlier comments about the service, Trump had said, “I didn’t think it was a good service,” and later took to Truth Social to express his dissatisfaction further.

He also criticized the service for being “boring and uninspiring,” suggesting that Budde was not effective in her role. Trump concluded by claiming that she and her church owed the public an apology.

This exchange followed Trump’s executive orders on Monday, after being sworn in for a second term, which included suspending the arrival of asylum seekers and expelling undocumented migrants.

Additionally, Trump decreed that only male and female genders would be officially recognized, excluding transgender individuals.
