Trump: Make products in America or face tariffs

In his first major address to global business leaders since returning to the White House, US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning on Thursday, telling companies to manufacture in the United States or face tariffs.

He made the remarks remotely during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Trump, who has been back in office since Monday, reiterated his intention to impose significant tariffs on major trade partners like Canada, Mexico, and China, potentially as early as February 1. Since his inauguration, he has also signed multiple executive orders, including pulling the US out of the Paris Climate Accords and the World Health Organization.

“Come make your product in America and we’ll offer you some of the lowest taxes anywhere in the world,” Trump stated. “But if you choose not to manufacture here, you’ll have to pay a tariff.”

In addition to trade issues, Trump addressed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, suggesting that lower oil prices could end the war. “If oil prices came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately,” he remarked. He added that he would press Saudi Arabia and OPEC to reduce oil costs.

Trump also discussed his relationship with China, expressing optimism but emphasizing the need for fairness in trade. He noted his past administration’s tariffs on Beijing and warned that higher duties could return.

On economic matters, Trump signaled that he would push for lower interest rates both in the US and globally. “I’ll demand that interest rates drop immediately,” he declared. “They should be lowering everywhere.”

The president also addressed social issues, stating that his administration has made it “official policy” that there are only two genders—male and female—and voiced opposition to transgender women competing in women’s sports. He further stated that gender surgeries would be rare under his watch.

Since taking office, Trump has prioritized overhauling US trade policies, directing agencies to investigate trade deficits and unfair practices, which could lead to more tariffs in the future.
