Unknown assailants murder Adamawa corps member in cold blood

Story from Abdulaziz M JAURO, Yola

There was pandemonium at the Yolde Pate corpers’ lodge in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State following the murder of a 28-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Samaila Awudu, from Taraba State.

Reports indicate that the incident had instilled fears in the minds of the NYSC members serving in Adamawa.

The incident happened in the wee hours of Saturday when armed men numbering five struck the lodge and attacked the corps member resulting in life-threatening wounds.

Neptune Prime reports that the victim was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yola for treatment in the company of the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police where he gave up the ghost.

Confirming the incident, Adamawa State NYSC Director, Mr Jingi Dennis, said that investigation is ongoing to unravel the killers of the corps member.

He described the death of Awudu as a huge loss not only to Taraba State but to the whole nation.

Dennis noted that NYSC authorities, the state government and the police are doing everything possible to unravel the mystery and to bring the perpetrators of the heinous act to book.

He called on the parents of the corps member to take everything as the will of God adding that death can come at any time.

Responding to Neptune Prime’s reporter, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sulieman Ngoruje, said the Command is aware of the situation and that investigation had already begun.

“The Adamawa State Police Command under the leadership of C. P Sikiru Akande is already investigating to find out those behind this killing, coupled with the fact that the police are saddled with the responsibility to investigate and fish out those behind this crime.

“Where somebody’s life is taken the police will not relent in its effort to fish out those behind the crime and bring them to book”.

“We are assuring all members of the public that this is an eye opener and the Command has already met with the NYSC officials so that the lives of NYSC members in Adamawa State could be secured.

“When the incident happened, the Commissioner of Police drove down to the scene and he was the first person to take him to the hospital,” Nguroje said.

According to the PPRO, “It is on record that this is the very first time such a thing is happening in Adamawa State. We have lots of NYSC members who can testify to that. The Command is working towards their safety and we are not going to allow such a thing to happen in this state again,” he emphasised.

He called on corps members to go about their normal duties because a lot of measures have been put in place to checkmate hoodlums with the assurance of the safety of their lives in the state.

A corps member who spoke in anonymity said the killers were more than five in number. He noted that when the assailants came, they locked up all the doors of the other corp members before going to Samaila’s room.

“They used an axe in cutting him and thought he was already dead. Since all the other corps members were locked up in their rooms, there was no way for anyone to come to Samaila’s aid. Maybe they were hired killers we don’t know. Right now we are all living in fear,” the corps member said.

A very close friend of Samaila Awudu described his death as heartbreaking and a loss not only to the band members but to the entire NYSC nationwide.

“He was very close to me and I don’t know how I will get over the shock. I wish him eternal rest”, he concluded.
