US sells seized luxury items from jailed Nigerian official

Abidemi Rufai, a former Nigerian government official who served time in a US prison for fraud, had his seized luxury items auctioned off by US authorities.

Rufai was convicted in 2022 for defrauding US government agencies of over $600,000 using stolen identities, including pandemic unemployment benefits.

As part of his restitution, Rufai forfeited a Cartier watch and a gold chain necklace. These items were subsequently sold at an online auction, fetching a combined total of $7,086.69.

These proceeds were applied towards Rufai’s outstanding debt to the US government, which currently stands at over $597,000.

Rufai was released from prison in November 2024 but his current location is unknown.
