Usman Alkali Baba assumes office as IGP after decoration, handover

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday, decorated Usman Alkali Baba with the new rank of Inspector-general of Police (IGP).

The event took place at Aso Villa in Abuja with the former IGP, Mohammed Adamu; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha; the Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu and his colleague in the office of the Vice President, Laolu Akande in attendance.

Also present was the Permanent Secretary, State House, Tijjani Umar, and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs.

President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), through the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammad Dingyadi, had on Tuesday appointed Baba to succeed Mohammed Adamu, outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP) who also handed over to his successor, Wednesday.

The ceremony took place at the Louis Edet House Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The handing-over took place shortly after Baba was decorated with his new rank by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in the State House, Abuja.

The Acting IGP replaced Mr Mohammed Adamu, whose tenure expired February 1, 2021, but President Buhari extended his tenure for three months.

Until his appointment, Usman Alkali Baba was a Deputy Inspector-General, DIG of Police, and will be in acting capacity pending his confirmation by the Senate.

Born in 1963, Baba, an alumnus of Bayero University, Kano, and the University of Maiduguri, joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1988.

He holds a Teacher’s Grade II Certificate (TC II) from Teachers College, Potiskum, Yobe State in 1980.

He obtained a degree in Political Science from Bayero University, Kano in 1985.

The Acting IGP also has a Masters in Public Administration obtained from the University of Maiduguri, Borno State in 1997.

As part of his policing vision, he aims to enhance police primacy in Nigeria through the provision of motivational and credible leadership, directed at stabilising internal security and modernising police operations, facilities and standards within the framework of citizens, consent, trust, and the rule of law.
