Visitor arrested for concealing illicit drugs in food for inmate

Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) have arrested a visitor who allegedly attempted to smuggle illicit drugs into a custodial facility by hiding them inside food meant for an inmate.

The incident occurred at the Agodi Custodial Centre in Ibadan during routine security screening of visitors. According to authorities, the suspect arrived at the facility with cooked food items intended for an inmate but was intercepted after officers conducted a thorough inspection.

During the search, correctional officers reportedly discovered substances suspected to be hard drugs concealed inside the food. The attempt was foiled before the items could reach the inmate.

The Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Command of the NCoS confirmed the arrest, commending officers for their vigilance and professionalism. He reiterated that the Service maintains strict screening procedures to prevent the introduction of contraband into correctional facilities.

The suspect has since been handed over to the appropriate anti-drug agency for further investigation and possible prosecution. Authorities emphasized that smuggling prohibited items into custodial centres is a criminal offence and warned members of the public against attempting to compromise prison security.

The arrest underscores ongoing efforts by correctional authorities to strengthen internal security and maintain order within custodial institutions across the country.
