We don’t want war, but we will fight when provoked – Niger junta

General Abdourahamane Tchiani, leader of the mutineers who took control of Niger Republic, conveyed the message that his country seeks peace and does not desire war, yet emphasizes their preparedness to defend themselves if necessary.

Al Jazeera reported Tchiani’s statement, highlighting that neither the Nigerien army nor its people have an appetite for war, emphasizing their intent to resist any form of aggression.

Furthermore, Tchiani pointed out that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) fails to recognize Niger’s crucial role in maintaining stability amidst increasing terrorist activities in the region.

Tchiani clarified that the sanctions imposed on Niger were more targeted towards pressuring the rebels, rather than finding a comprehensive solution to the ongoing situation.

He further mentioned that the rebels’ objective is not to assume power but to find a resolution that aligns with the interests of the Nigerien people.

Media outlets reported on Saturday that an ECOWAS delegation arrived in Niger’s capital to meet with the deposed President, Mohamed Bazoum, to assess his confinement conditions. Subsequently, the delegation also engaged in talks with General Tchiani, signaling ongoing efforts to find a peaceful resolution.

The coup, which occurred on July 26th, led to the removal and detention of President Bazoum at the hands of his own guard, commanded by General Tchiani. In response, ECOWAS suspended financial aid, froze rebel assets, and imposed a ban on commercial flights to and from Niger. At an ECOWAS summit in August, leaders agreed to activate a standby force, potentially compelling the Nigerien military to reinstate President Bazoum.

Recently, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Abdel-Fatau Musah, revealed that the general staff chiefs had agreed on a date for military intervention, though this information would not be disclosed publicly. As ECOWAS engages with the situation, hopes for a peaceful resolution remain high, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and restraint.
