WhatsApp admin shot dead for removing member from community group chat

Story from Hamzat Ibrahim

A WhatsApp admin, Mushtaq Ahmed, has been shot dead in Pakistan for removing a member from a community group chat.

Ahmed was killed on Thursday evening in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province bordering Afghanistan known for sectarian violence. Police documents seen by AFP and a local officer identified the suspect as a man named Ashfaq, who has been charged with murder.

According to a statement from Ahmed’s brother, Ashfaq was removed from the WhatsApp group after an argument. The two had agreed to meet for reconciliation, but Ashfaq allegedly arrived armed and opened fire, killing Ahmed.

Ashfaq acted “in reaction to removal from WhatsApp group,” the statement read.

The availability of firearms, tribal customs, and weak law enforcement contribute to the frequency of such incidents in the region.
