WhatsApp ends support for 35+ devices due to outdated operating systems

As the widely-used messaging platform WhatsApp evolves and updates its software beyond the capacity of older devices, a minimum of 35 different models and devices are set to lose access to the ppopular instant messaging application.

This latest development reflects the ongoing evolution of modern technology and may impact many users.

The proliferation of cell phones in people’s daily lives has led to the rise of numerous applications designed to enhance their functionality. Instant messaging applications have become particularly popular, replacing the traditional SMS service that was once ubiquitous.

WhatsApp has garnered widespread acclaim for its compatibility with almost all mobile devices and its array of useful features. However, the ‘expiration’ of such services is often tied to the obsolescence of the devices’ operating systems, which are periodically updated until certain older devices are left behind.

In 2024, WhatsApp will no longer support devices with obsolete operating systems, as they will no longer receive application updates.

This is due to the necessity of having an up-to-date operating system to install new improvement packages. As a result, several models of cell phones, particularly those with Android versions prior to 5.0 and iPhones with iOS versions prior to 12, will lose access to the instant messaging application.

A compilation from specialized portals such as 20 bits sheds light on the models and devices that will no longer support WhatsApp following the software update.

Notable brands affected include Apple, Archos, Huawei, Lenovo, LG, Samsung, Sony, Wiko, and ZTE.

The devices no longer compatible with WhatsApp include specific models from each brand, reflecting the changing landscape of technology and its compatibility with modern software.
