Why I knelt to beg Wike – Fubara
Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has urged his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to prioritize peace in the state.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Monday, Fubara mentioned that he had even knelt down to plead with Wike.
The governor noted that he had made every effort to reach an understanding with his predecessor to maintain peace in the state, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
He also expressed that he does not regret holding last Saturday’s local government election in Rivers State, despite facing opposition from Wike’s supporters within the PDP and the APC.

“There is nothing I have not done on this earth for peace to reign. I can tell you the number of times I have knelt to beg that let’s allow this issue to go. I have done everything,” he said.
When asked what he would say to Wike if they met, Governor Fubara replied, “I’d tell him it’s time to let go. We need peace in this state.”
“You don’t necessarily need to win all the fights; at times, you just let go for the sake of the good people of Rivers State and the love that you have always professed for the state. We need to secure the state.

“When it comes to the election period, you can fight and do whatever but now is the time for governance. We need all the support.”
Political tensions between Fubara and Wike escalated during the local council elections held over the weekend. Despite the PDP, APC, and police withdrawing from the electoral process, the governor moved forward with the elections on Saturday.
The situation turned chaotic on Monday, the day after the swearing-in of 22 winners from the contentious elections. Violent clashes erupted in at least four local government areas, with thugs setting parts of buildings in Eleme, Ikwerre, and Emohua ablaze. Sporadic gunfire was reported in Ahoada East as resistance grew against the newly appointed council officials.
