Wizkid Breaks Record: Become first African to surpass 8bn streams on Spotify
Nigerian superstar Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid or Starboy, has once again proven his global influence by becoming the first African artist to surpass 8 billion streams on Spotify.
This achievement, confirmed on December 31, 2024, solidifies his position as a trailblazer in the global music industry.
The 34-year-old singer, who first gained international attention with his feature on Drake’s record-breaking track “One Dance,” continues to push boundaries.

The 2016 hit remains Wizkid’s most-streamed song on the platform, with over 2 billion streams. “One Dance” also holds a Guinness World Record as the first single to cross 1 billion Spotify streams.
With this remarkable feat, Wizkid leads the list of Nigeria’s most-streamed artists on Spotify, followed by Burna Boy with over 7.5 billion streams and Rema with 4.3 billion streams. Other notable mentions include Tems (3.2 billion streams) and Davido (2.4 billion streams), highlighting the growing dominance of Afrobeats globally.
The numbers reflect the increasing popularity of African music worldwide, a movement spearheaded by artists like Wizkid, who consistently deliver chart-topping albums and unforgettable performances. His 2020 album Made in Lagos continues to resonate globally, with hits like “Essence” featuring Tems becoming cultural anthems.
