The Yobe Government has enjoined the United Nations (UN) to prioritize the State in its consolidated appeal processes for humanitarian needs in the Northeast.

Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni made the appeal recently in Damaturu while receiving Mr Edward Kallon, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator who paid his a courtesy visit.

“This is a call to the UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator and his team to prioritize Yobe State in the country’s consolidated appeal processes for humanitarian needs in Northeast.

“This will support the state government in alleviating the plight of the vulnerable people in an already traumatized and insurgency ravaged communities in the state.”

Buni represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Idi Gubana also called for the need to empower the local stakeholders in order to ensure the sustainability of all humanitarian assistance in the state.

Buni noted that while there were good indices of recovery needs in Yobe State, the growing humanitarian needs in the state is becoming alarming.

“This is evident by the growing sporadic attacks by the insurgents in some locations along the Maiduguri-Damaturu route.

“As well as flooding that affected some communities across the 17 LGAs in the state which was further compounded by the impact of COVID-19 pandemic among other driving factors.”, Buni said.

Buni commended the UN, World Food Programme (WFP), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for their support to the state.

Earlier in his address, Mr Edward Kallon, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator said the UN was ready to assist Yobe state to actualise its aspirations.

“We are here in Yobe to listen from you and to see how we can better engage and work with you, to help and support your development aspirations.”, he said.
