Yobe, ICPC organise capacity building workshop to strengthen fiscal transparency at LG level

The Yobe State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has organised a two-day capacity-building workshop for local government officials.
The workshop, which opened Tuesday, is designed to strengthen fiscal transparency and accountability across the state’s 17 local government areas.
The ICPC Borno/Yobe Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Mr Linus Gubbi, emphasised the critical nature of the partnership in his address.
He stated that the collaboration is rooted in the shared belief that integrity is the foundation of effective public administration.
“This collaboration reflects the shared understanding that effective public administration must be rooted in integrity and that sustainable development can only thrive where public resources are managed with discipline and responsibility,” Mr Gubbi stated.
He commended the Yobe State Government for its proactive engagement in strengthening financial systems, noting that the workshop reflects a strong commitment to “enabling good governance, improving transparency, and fostering responsive financial management at the local level.”
Declaring the workshop open, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana, explained that the training aims to equip officials with the necessary skills to uphold the highest standards of accountability.
He framed the initiative as a critical component of his administration’s broader governance reform agenda, which began in 2019.
The Governor highlighted ongoing efforts to modernise financial management, including the deployment of digital payment systems to boost revenue and enhanced audit processes to ensure value for public money.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Adamu Jajere, outlined the administration’s reforms to improve local government financial management through uniform accounting standards, transparency, and accountability.

“This training, in collaboration with the ICPC, aims to deepen knowledge in fiscal laws, ethical governance, digital finance, and audit compliance.
“The goal is to ensure the prudent use of public funds and to build sustainable governance that serves both present and future needs,” said Jajere.
The partnership signals a robust, institutional approach to combating corruption, focusing on prevention by building the capacity of officials who manage public funds directly within local communities.
