Yobe partners with Swiss experts for flood prevention solutions

In a proactive effort to address future disaster risks, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has partnered with the Swiss Government Delegation to conduct a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) field mission in flood-affected communities.

This initiative is part of Yobe’s broader strategy to transition from reactive disaster management to a focus on prevention, specifically aimed at reducing the risks posed by future floods.

The mission, led by Deputy Ambassador Siamak Rouhani and DRR expert Ms. Valeria Hutter, included Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with residents of communities that were devastated by last year’s floods.

The aim was to gather valuable insights and empower local populations with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent future disasters.

Prior to the field visit, Yobe SEMA’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Goje, met with Ms. Hutter to discuss the steps the state had already taken in response to last year’s floods.

According to Dr. Goje, these measures align with directives from Yobe’s Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, who has long emphasized the importance of prioritizing preventive strategies in disaster management, even before the floods occurred.

Dr. Goje also highlighted Yobe’s strategic shift toward a more preventive approach, which includes enhanced coordination, improved information sharing, and a robust early warning system, all underpinned by a well-functioning Emergency Operations Center (EOC). He expressed his appreciation to the Swiss delegation for their visit and reaffirmed SEMA’s commitment to supporting the initiative.

In his remarks, Deputy Ambassador Rouhani praised the Yobe State government for its commitment to peace and resilience. He shared his recent experience visiting Damaturu’s Bayan Tasha market, where he was able to move freely without security concerns, noting it as a positive sign of the state’s progress in fostering peace post-conflict.

Mr. Nicolas Martin-Achard, another member of the Swiss delegation, assured Yobe officials of Switzerland’s continued support in mobilizing technical resources and expertise to further strengthen the state’s Disaster Risk Reduction efforts.

This collaboration between Yobe State and Switzerland underscores a shared commitment to building a more resilient future for communities at risk, emphasizing the importance of prevention over reaction in disaster management.
