Yobe to host 5th Lake Chad governors’ forum

The Yobe State government is set to host the fifth Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum meeting in Maiduguri, Borno State, from January 29 to 31, 2025.

The forum was established to address ongoing regional challenges, and this meeting comes at a critical time when the region is grappling with the impacts of the Boko Haram conflict, extreme poverty, climate change, and various socio-economic issues.

A statement by Hon. Abdullahi Bego, the Yobe State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information, and Culture, highlights that over the past 15 years, the Lake Chad Basin has seen widespread displacement, affecting more than 6 million people, including refugees and internally displaced persons.

Approximately 74% of these individuals are in Nigeria, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated regional responses.

Leaders from Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon will come together to discuss strategies for peace and development in the region.

The forum, themed “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,” will focus on promoting dialogue, cooperation, and coordination among the affected countries. Key topics will include the current security and humanitarian situation, facilitating exits from Boko Haram-controlled areas, and accelerating the implementation of Territorial Action Plans (TAPs).
