Yobe to power secondary schools with solar energy by 2025

Story Victor Itodo ABUH

The Yobe State Government has announced plans to shift from fossil fuels to solar energy for powering public secondary schools by 2025.

Alhaji Baba Malam-Wali, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), revealed this during an inspection of various ongoing government projects at schools in Nguru on Monday.

Among the schools inspected were Government Higher Islamic College, Nguru; Government Day Secondary School, Gashua; Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC), Yobe Campus; and Government Girls Unity College, Damaturu, among others.

Malam-Wali explained that this initiative is part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to enhance the quality of education in Yobe State.

He highlighted the multifaceted approach the government has adopted since 2019 to reform the education sector, which includes measures to decongest schools.

To combat overcrowding in urban areas, the state has built new model schools and collaborated with traditional leaders to boost primary school enrollment in rural regions.

The SSG also mentioned that the government has covered the examination fees for students sitting for the 2025 West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO) exams, alleviating financial pressure on parents.

He added that new secondary schools for girls have been established to empower young women to pursue their education without barriers.

Malam-Wali also emphasised the government’s significant investment in rehabilitating schools, providing essential furniture, and enhancing school facilities.

According to the SSG, the state’s free feeding programme for secondary school students is currently in progress and requires a budget of approximately N500 million per month.

Principals of the schools visited in Nguru expressed their appreciation for the government’s continuous support. They noted the positive effects these initiatives have had on student enrollment, academic performance, and the general state of school infrastructure.

Mr Hasibullahi Jogi, the principal of NTIC, Yobe Campus, commended the government for its commitment to the education sector, stating, “The support from the state government has been invaluable.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Rajab Ismail, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Yobe Council, who accompanied the journalists on the tour, stressed the significance of impartial reporting.

He urged reporters to uphold national unity and progress by setting aside personal biases and maintaining objective journalism.

Ismail said, “Journalists should always strive for accuracy and fairness in their reporting, promoting the development of our nation.” (NAN)
