Yobe Under Gov. Mai Mala Buni: Progress and development have been made, by Ibrahim Bulama Lamba
Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni has set a record that has never been seen before in the state. Yobe State is now 31 years old, but interestingly, the state has made strides in almost every aspect of human development.
To improve the economic status of the state, efforts have been made to promote and develop businesses and encourage entrepreneurship. Governor Mai Mala Buni is carrying out the construction of modern markets in Damaturu, Potiskum, Gashu’a, Nguru, Geidam, Gulani, Fika, Buni Yadi and Ngelzarma, with varying degrees of completion. In the near future, other towns will benefit from similar projects.
In addition, markets will also have butcher shops, parking lots, streets and security will be given due attention. These facilities, in addition to facilitating trade, will also create an environment that will attract trade and investment to the state.
According to Governor Buni, while laying the groundwork for the construction of the Potiskum Modern Market, he said.
“The Yobe State Government is building markets to create a conducive environment for the people to grow their businesses”.
Governor Mai Mala Buni is committed to making Yobe State economically prosperous, by encouraging people to become self-reliant through trade and investment opportunities.
The Governoris also constructing a truck terminal at Potiskum, the commercial nerve of Yobe State. This is the first time that the people of Yobe, especially Potiskum, have seen this kind of project which is a big booster for the betterment and development of the state.
In the area of health, His Excellency, Governor Buni has launched the construction of a primary healthcare center in all the districts across the state and upgraded their facilities. He is also constructing the largest maternity clinic in Nigeria at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu.
Governor Buni’s administration has provided 138 primary healthcare centers in 138 wards of 17 local government areas of Yobe State, and distributed 80 tricycle ambulances at various hospitals in Yobe State. He has also built medical stores in Potiskum, Nguru, Gashua and Damaturu.
He built a special baby care units in Gashua, Potiskum, and diagnostic center at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu, officer’s quarters at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu. Similarly he built 150 bed capacity dormitories for medical students at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu, and 200 beds capacity hostel in school of nursing, Damaturu.
Governor Buni also expanded and upgraded Kumaganam hospital in Yusufari Local Government Area, revived Buni Yadi Hospital with new buildings after being burnt to the ground by Boko Haram insurgents, distributed new ambulances to various hospitals in the State.
He also constructed a new hall, office, classroom, street and drainage at the College of Nursing in Damaturu, and secured automatic employment for 240 new midwives and pharmacists in the state. He created the Contributory Health Care Agency which continued to distribute free drugs in Yobe State Hospitals and clinics.
Mai Mala Buni has done a commendable job in the field of health care development in Yobe State and because of this, women due for childbirth are given the necessary care and attention at all the primary health care centers, which also absolve them the burden of traveling to specialist hospital and also reduces the risk of birth while on transit to major hospitals.
In recognition to Governor Buni’s efforts in Health Care, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Aliko Dangote, the Minister of Health and the Executive Director National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), have all applauded Governor Mai Mala Buni’s successes in revamping and strengthening Primary Health Care across Yobe state.
On roads construction, the Mai Mala Buni administration has constructed town roads in almost all local government headquarters and other towns across the state.
Other ongoing road projects include, 94 km from Gujba to Ngalda, 30 km from Balangua to Kumagannam, 18 km from Garin Bingel to Danchua, 13 km from Nguru to Balangua, 10 from Damagum to Gubana, 10 km from Tagali to Chumbosko, 30 km Fika to Maluri and 20 kilometer from Potiskum to Degubi.
These projects will certainly boost the economic development of Yobe State.
Similarly, the present administration hasn’t neglected the education sector. In the history of Yobe State, this is the first time that an education summit was organised, with the declaration of a state of emergency in education, Governor Mai Mala Buni FCIA has set up a Teachers’ Assessment Committee, to improve teaching in the state and introduce new programs for the development of education in the state.
In addition, the Mai Mala Buni government has built 7 new mega schools and 6 model schools in the state, provided modern school facilities and rehabilitated boarding school, as well as enhancing students feeding routine by including eggs, chickens and fruits in their food menu.
Mai Mala Buni did not stop there, he renovated over 200 primary and secondary schools across the state, and also provided them with tables, chairs, books and other auxiliary items needed to facilitate quick learning.
Interns of power, Buni’s government has provided electricity to towns and villages, there are towns that have not seen electricity until now under this administration. The Governor is also servicing all the street lights in Damaturu.
Governor Buni has built 3,600 houses across Yobe State, this is the first time that the Yobe State Government has built several houses to improve the lives of the people of the State, beneficiaries of the houses include Yobe State University and Damaturu International Cargo Airport.
For the first time, the Yobe State Government has built Cargo Airport in Damaturu, and it is the first airport of its kind in the North-East, Governor Buni has successfully completed this big project, and it will soon be opened for commercial use.
In an effort to address the security challenges posed by Boko Haram and its affiliates, the Governor of Yobe State, Hon Mai Mala Buni, has launched a ‘Haba Maza’ campaign with the donation of 30 new Hilux vehicles to the state police command, in an effort to encourage the security forces to continue to provide security and protect lives and public property.
Security has improved, as the Governor has lifted the ban on motorcycles in 10 local government areas of Yobe State.
In order to reduce the menace caused by unemployment, Governor Mai Mala Buni has provided employment to many youths as follows; He employed 230 young people in Yorota, taught 1,000 young people on making of interlock blocks, trains 600 young people in painting, trains 200 young people in handicrafts, trains 100 young people on the use of POS, trained 100 young people in modern car repair techniques, taught 200 young people carpentry skills and provided them with startup funds and equipments, as well as enrolling young people in sewing schools, wire repair and tea/bakery trade, He employed candidates who studied pharmacy, nursing, midwifery etc.
Governor Mala Buni makes history in Northern Nigeria for introducing Yobe State Emergency Medical Ambulance Services, which started with nine new ambulances with a plan to recruit staff to implement a system that will assist in providing first aid to patients, self-employed, or emergency responders.
When it comes to humanitarian and disaster management, I do not know where to start because Gov. Buni has done alot in the area of humanitarian and disaster management. Since the beginning of this administration, we have seen the effort being made towards the provision of assistance to flood victims, who have lost properties worth millions of naira, as well as in the curbing of fire infernos in parts of the state, particularly Nguru and Potiskum markets and to individuals who were victims of fire. Also More than 59,000 households have benefited from the SEMA grant.
The Mai Mala Buni government through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), have assisted many people, with their swift response to flood and fire infernos that occurred in the state. Example to that, on Tuesday 30th November and 1st December 2021, over 90 farmers in Gulani Local Government of Yobe State who are at eve of harvest lost their farmlands due to fire inferno, also the Gashua Zangon Kanwa Market fire inferno, which occurred on 11th November 2021, where about 20 people were affected, on the same week, 2 separate incidents happened affecting Girgir Market in Jakusko LGA, and farmlands in Ngelshelgele Ngelzarma B ward of Fune LGA, all the victims were compensated by the caring governor.
Recently, Yobe government under Gov. Buni have launched tree planting campaign in commemoration of world humanitarian day 2021, which took place in Jakusko Local Government on 19th August, 2021. The Yobe State Governor in this regard pledge to sustained the drive at raising 20 million assorted seedlings for land restoration and increased vegetation cover, within four years as they started in 2020.
Gov. Buni has set up sanitation committee in each of the 17 local governments areas of the state.
For the first time, Governor Buni has revived Yobe State-owned companies that have shut down, including Yobe Flour Mills Potiskum, Sahel Aluminum Company Potiskum, Yobe state Polythene and Woven Sacks Campany Damaturu, Gujba Fertilizer Company and others, this has revived Yobe State and created jobs.
In his desire to close unemployment gap, Mai Mala Buni has created the Ministry of Employment and Wealth Creation, this is a big pointer to the governor’s determination of taking the welfare of people of the state as one of his prime interest, as evident by the appointment of Alh. Abdullahi Bego as the ministry’s pioneer commissioner.
Buni has improved the welfare of civil servants, by making sure that anything that affects them is being tackled instantly particularly training, salaries and allied issues which were settled promptly.
Mai Mala has been carrying all people of the state in the sprit of brotherhood, as even people of other political parties have passed their vote of confidence on him.
Buni, the outcaring governor has given our fathers – Emirs, Chiefs and elders the desired respect as he usually consult with them on majority of state issues and their fatherly advises are always enshrined into the framework of governance.
In as much as time and space will not allow me to bring all the progress/achievements that Buni’s administration has made during his tenure as Governor of Yobe State, we hope the Governor will continue his work to build and push Yobe State forward.
