The Speaker of Zimbabwe’s parliament says he has received a letter of resignation from President Robert Mugabe, as impeachment proceedings against him were underway.
The letter reads: “I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation… with immediate effect,” said speaker Mudenda.
Mugabe said his decision was voluntary and to “kindly give public notice of my decision as soon as possible.”
There was jubilation on the streets of Harare and across the country as news of the 96-year-old’s resignation hit the airwaves.

#Mugabe has been trending on Twitter since he was placed on house arrest and global media has followed the developments in the Southern African country closely.
Twitter was lit with tweets of his resignation.

Mugabe ruled for 37 years.
The Military placed him under house arrest last week and tried to negotiate his removal from office as officers claimed it was not a coup.
Mugabe’s wife, Grace Mugabe, popularly called Gucci Grace was also suspended from his party after reports said she was gunning to contest for Presidency in the next general election billed to hold next year.
Earlier today, Mugabe’s vice who was removed from office urged him to resign.
