Zulum pays ₦8bn, clears gratuities for retired primary school teachers, others

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the release of ₦8 billion to settle the backlog of pensions and gratuities owed to retired primary school teachers and other civil servants. The liabilities cover arrears accrued from 2019 to 2021.
Governor Zulum made the announcement on Wednesday at the Government House in Maiduguri. He highlighted his administration’s ongoing efforts to address long-standing issues with pension payments, stating that over ₦25 billion has been paid for gratuities since he assumed office in 2019.
“In 2019, we released N3 billion to clear gratuities for 1,684 retirees from 2013 to 2019. In 2020, over ₦12 billion was disbursed for retirees from the state and local government civil service who exited between 2013 and 2017,” Zulum said.

Reiterating his commitment, the governor assured that all outstanding pensions and gratuities would be cleared before his tenure ends in 2027. “Insh’Allah, I will ensure the backlog is fully paid before I leave office,” he affirmed.
The move has been lauded as a significant step towards addressing the financial challenges faced by retirees in Borno State. Many beneficiaries have expressed relief, noting the positive impact of these payments on their livelihoods.
