1-year-old boy among 15 killed in Plateau night attack

On Sunday night, assailants reportedly murdered 15 people, including a one-year-old boy, in cold blood at Ri Do, also known as Gidan Ado, a hamlet in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Irigwe Development Association (IDA), in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Sam Jugo, condemned the attack, stating that the predominantly Irigwe Native community from Bassa was targeted without provocation.

The gunmen, whose identities remain unknown, invaded the hamlet and killed 15 people, leaving several others seriously injured.

The association expressed deep concern over the attack, especially given its proximity to the holiday season, and called on security agencies to prevent such violent acts and avoid potential reprisals.

“The identities of the perpetrators have not yet been determined, and it would be premature to speculate, as investigations are ongoing,” the statement read. “We appeal for restraint from our community, trusting that the security agencies will take the necessary steps to prevent further violence and reprisals.”

As of now, neither the Joint Security Task Force, Operation Safe Haven, nor the police have made any public statements regarding the attack. Meanwhile, the victims have been laid to rest in a mass burial at the community’s cemetery.
