A wave of coordinated bandit attacks across Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State has left at least 16 vigilantes dead and 42 residents kidnapped between Sunday, November 9, and Thursday, November 13, 2025.

The violence began on Sunday in Dutsen Magaji, where armed bandits abducted 22 villagers. Vigilante members mobilized in pursuit, leading to a gun battle that claimed the lives of three vigilantes and left five others injured.

On Thursday morning, the attackers struck again in Magama village during dawn prayers. According to witnesses, the bandits surrounded the mosque and seized more than 20 worshippers. Vigilantes who attempted to rescue the victims were ambushed, resulting in 13 additional deaths and several injuries.
