Tinubu to undertake first Nigerian State visit to UK in 37 years
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to embark on a historic two-day state visit to the United Kingdom from March 18 to 19, 2026, following an invitation from King Charles III. This will mark the first Nigerian state visit to the UK in 37 years.
According to the official statement from the British Royal Family and the UK government, President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu will be formally hosted at Windsor Castle, where they are expected to participate in ceremonial receptions, including a state banquet and an honour guard inspection.
State visits are considered the highest form of diplomatic engagement, combining ceremonial grandeur with discussions on bilateral relations. Officials say this visit aims to strengthen Nigeria–UK ties, covering areas such as trade, security, development, and climate cooperation.

Analysts note that the visit underscores a renewed commitment to diplomatic and economic engagement between Nigeria and the UK. Trade between the two nations currently exceeds £8 billion, highlighting their growing economic partnership.
This will be the first Nigerian state visit to the UK since General Ibrahim Babangida in 1989, following earlier visits by General Yakubu Gowon (1973) and President Shehu Shagari (1981).
The full itinerary of the visit is yet to be released, but high-level meetings and engagements are expected to focus on bilateral cooperation and strategic partnerships.
