2 die as police, soldier clash in Nasarawa
Two individuals have been confirmed dead in the Obi local government area of Nasarawa, on Sunday, following a violent confrontation between a military officer and a police special constable affiliated with the Jenkwe Division at Agyaragu Market.
According to a statement issued by the state’s Police Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, the conflict started during an investigation into a reported motorcycle theft at approximately 12:30 PM.

Following a thorough investigation, police operatives, in collaboration with a Police Special Constabulary, successfully apprehended a suspect in connection with the theft.
While conveying the suspect to the police station, however, a soldier (name not mentioned) who was said to be serving in Borno State but came home on pass, attacked the police operatives in a bid to prevent the operatives from effecting the arrest.
Consequently, the statement alleged that the soldier brought out a knife and stabbed the Police Special Constabulary.
“In self-defence, the soldier was overpowered, and his knife was used against him. They both sustained varying degrees of injuries, and the wounded soldier was subsequently confirmed dead,” the statement said in part.
In view of the foregoing, some youths were said to have mobilised and stormed the police station, setting it ablaze.
Police were said to have responded to the attack, and fatally injured three of the attackers where one was later confirmed dead.
“Upon receipt of the information, the Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Nadada immediately visited the scene alongside Military personnel from Operation Whirl Stroke, 177 Guards Battalion and 22 Quick Response Unit where he swiftly ordered the deployment of a unit of Police Mobile Force, a cell of Counter Terrorist Unit and Tactical units to restore peace in the area,” the statement added.
The statement added that normalcy has been restored, and an investigation is ongoing as the commissioner orders manhunt for perpetrators.
