Few days ago, Internally Displaced Persons in Gubio Camp went on rampage, destroying vehicles and relief materials brought in for distribution by the World Food Programme and International Medical Corps.
The IDPs had during the rampage accused the two organizations of diverting, pilfering and shortchanging the food items meant for them as the number of bags of food hitherto distributed per group of 30 people had been slashed to half with no cogent explanation for such drop in the quantity they used to receive.
A source from the Camp who spoke with Neptune Prime on condition of anonymity revealed that 30 people use to share six bags of Rice, Four Bags of beans, four bags of corn flour and six litres of cooking oil.
According to the source , the donor agencies who could not distribute food in the last two months however, brought half each of all the items to be distributed to the same 30 people expected to feed them for the next 30 days.
The source further revealed that the distributing agencies had also taken stock of all IDPs engaged in active farming and businesses, delisted them from the list of beneficiaries of the food and relief materials to be distributed in the camp.
The source claimed that the agencies are conniving with the camp officials to divert or pilfer some food items meant for the IDPs and resolved to fight the injustice.
The protest at Gubio camp which lasted for over six hours was however calmed by the military who promptly arrested six of the camp leaders but later released them as neither the World Food Programme nor the International Medical Corps who were attacked could report to the security agencies.
Similar drama happened yesterday when Baobab For Women Human Rights under The Women and Children right and Empowerment Foundation was disrupted by the IDPs who pounced on the distributors led by Professor Hauwa Abdu Biu at Fori wards area of the State.
Professor Hauwa Biu who had successfully distributed clothes and food items to over seventy orphans and some widows at the Future Prowess Islamic Foundation, Fori was emotionally touched by the sights of the vulnerable people and IDPs who had thronged the area to witness the distribution of the relief materials to orphanage school, but to her dismay, the IDPs became unruly and destroyed the food items, causing her a slight injury and some members of her entourage.
Neptune Prime Correspondent, Junaid Jibril who was at the scene reports that “If not for the intervention of some Good Samaritans ,The IDPs could have broken cameras of some journalists at the scene.”
Although IDPs have been protesting for their welfare which they claim has been hijacked by some officials sometime ago, the recent protest leaves much to be desired.
This development, Neptune Prime gathered has left donor agencies shaken and many say they are now scared of visiting the camps to distribute relief materials and therefore called for security to be beefed up at IDP camps.
